An examination of European origins and character of the Nazi Holocaust, this course will include a short history of European anti-Semitism, a look at how World War I and the Great Depression paved the way for Hitler and his genocidal policies, the mechanism of mass murder during the 1940-45 years, and the way that other countries, including the United States, responded the Holocaust. We will end with an examination of Holocaust denial. Among other sites, the trip will include a visit to key World War II and Holocaust sites, including the Reichstag, Dachau, the Holocaust memorial, and Hitler’s bunker in Berlin; the site of the Warsaw Ghetto; Krakow and the nearby Auschwitz concentration camp; the Jewish quarter of Prague. The tour will include lectures by European scholars and ample time to explore some of the cities of central and eastern Europe.
